A Notified Body is an organization designated by the EU Commission that assesses the conformity of certain products before being placed on the EU market. It is typically used in Directives where a 3rd party assessment element is mandatory, or where a 3rd party assessment is a legally recognized but voluntary way to endorse the manufacturer’s own self-certification. This usually only happens in technically unusual circumstances that do not lend themselves to the normal application of harmonised standards. Not all legislation uses Notified Bodies, and a Notified Body’s scope under each law is limited.
There is a similar procedure for UKCA conformity assessment using UK Approved Bodies. Technology International can now support US manufacturers with both Notified Body and Approved Body services for EMC and Radio conformity assessment services.
As we cover both CE and UKCA frameworks, we are a one-stop-shop. Most of the time use of such a body is entirely voluntary on the part of the manufacturer. However, if your product does not comply with harmonized/designated standards or because of product features or new technology, these are only partially applied, then Notified Body/Approved Body involvement in the conformity assessment process can be required.
Technology International offers Notified Body services through Technology International, Inc, based in Richmond, Virginia. The Notified Body number is 2863 and offers services to the EMC (2014/30/EU) and Radio Equipment (2014/53/EU) directives. UK Approved Body services are provided via Technology International’s UK office (Approved Body 0673) against the UK’s Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations (2008), Radio Equipment Regulations (2017), and EMC Regulations (2016) assisting manufacturers looking to apply UKCA marking.
